YOUTH SQUAD UPDATES Schoolboy Report August 2008
Race results for July/August have been sparse, as no one rings me up I have to ferret around for news. So here is all I have to hand for news. Apologies for mistaken names last month, namely Lewis and Leighton’s results. Obviously to all that know them Leighton is U 10’s and Lewis U 16’s. My mistake not Phil’s it’s the perennial Alzheimer's kicking in again. 26/7/08 Saltayre Lancaster Leighton U10’s 1st again
7/8/08 Litherland U 16’s Mike Gregg 1st “ Dan Whelan 2nd “ Lewis Sharman 3rd U 10’s Leighton 1st Over 16’s Jamie Shirlaw 1st although officially a schoolboy he raced against senior riders and beat them.
14/8/08 Litherland U 16’s Mike Gregg 1st U 14’s Nial Farrington 2nd “ Sean Fawcett 3rd U 12’s Adam Gibson 1st U 8’s Dan Gibson 1st
Jamie Shirlaw after an eventful summer holiday in the UK. With regard to racing results. He returned to Dubai on the 30th August back to sunshine at least and leave this wet and green island behind. His mum Lynne said she would have to frog march him on to the plane. Well done Jamie its been a pleasure having you over here. Mike Gregg is now concentrating on his time trialling and has lowered his 10 pb to 23.20. He is hoping to ride 2 X 25’s to go with his best 10’s to snatch the junior TT championship. Unless James Barnes and Danny Stevens have been secretly competing.
The schoolboy TT championship is wide open other Mike the rest of the schoolboys have only ridden club 10’s and you need an open 10 to go with your best club 10.
The schoolboy championship is confirmed and is as published last month.
As the road season comes to a close, its time for Hill Climbs and Cyclo-Cross, so get your bikes serviced and ready to go.
Dan Whelan has not stopped riding his mountain bike, competing all summer with Dean and Darren our senior MTB’ers as well as circuit racing in the UK and Holland also I believe. Let us know your results Dan for next months newsletter. Don’t forget the racing pre-Tour of Britain 14th September on the Pier head Circuit U16’s, U14’s, U12’s only. Contact Tom Greep 07753 840241 for info. That’s all Folks Ray Myers.
July sees the onset of School holidays coupled with family holidays. Some are in Mall orca some in France and some are racing so here is the latest news;- 6/7/08 Hillingdon (Landon) Nat. Series. Lewis Sharman 1st place once again, he lies 2nd overall in this National series, he cannot win as the leader has rode every event so far. 28/6/08 Blackpool Lewis Sharman 1st , no other results reported. 12/7/08 Preston National Championship Lewis Sharman 1st Champion U10 rider in UK. Dan Gibson 4th just missed the podium U8’s. Mike Gregg ) with 76 in field it was nigh impossible to get to the front Dan Whelan ) on this course, both finished together in mid 30’s (actually 38th/39th). 19/7/08 Litherland Leighton Sharman 1st U10’s. Lewis Sharman 8th U16’s. 26/7/08 CDNW Preston Leighton Sharman 1st. Leighton’s season goes from strength to strength he now has had about 20 wins this season, culminating in his U10’s National Championship. He was a little disappointed that he never received a yellow jersey confirming his place. (B.C. don't recognise U10’s) They let you pay an entry and race but don't recognise the title! He featured in our local “Warrington Guardian” with a big coloured picture and a write up of his exploits this season, never mind Leighton we recognise your terrific season and putting the club on the map, and young Dan Gibson U 8’s N.W. Champion with his report in the “Liverpool Echo”. Our multi talented riders also excel at other sports. Lewis Sharman secured a place with Manchester Majestic Basket ball team, however after a few weeks he has changed to Chester Jets. 23/7/08 Litherland Lewis Sharman 1st U 10’s Reid Rogers 2nd U12’s Dan Whelan 2nd U16’s 24/7/08 Preston Jamie Shirlaw 3rd (competing as a junior in the senior event). Lewis Sharman 5th U10’s Leighton Sharman 1st U16’s 30/7/08 Litherland Lewis Sharman 1st U 10’s Reid Rogers 2nd U12’s The Club Road Race qualifying events have been completed and here is the provisional positions;- U 16’s Mike Gregg 28pts Dan Whelan 25pts Lewis Sharman 24pts U 14’s Niall Farrington 12pts Sean Fawcett 6pts U 12’s Reid Rogers 12pts Adam Gibson 6pts U 10’s Leighton Sharman 47pts U 8’s Dan Gibson 25pts. The Time Trial Championship is wide open as one club monthly rides count + one open event on Lancashire, Liverpool or Manchester courses qualify. Most have at least one club event counting, only Mike Gregg, has to the best of my knowledge has ridden an open event this season (if I’m wrong let me know).
There is one more club event to count 27/8/08 and several open events to get your fast times in. One final item on the 14th September (Sunday) The Tour of Britain finishes in Liverpool City Centre. The local “British Cycling” are having schoolboy racing before the Tour arrives. Unfortunately, it will be for A, B, C cat only, ie U16’s, U14’s, U12’s as well as senior and junior racing. The course is around Mann Island at the Pier Head. Entries close 5th September to Tom Greep, tel 07753 840241. Entry fee TBA. So lets have all our riders on show far the huge crowds who will be watching on the day.
More next month Ray Myers.
Liverpool Century crits - Litherland
Races have gone well, bit low on numbers but those who have entered have done well. I have pasted a link for the report from “Bikenut” website http://www.bikenut.merseyblogs.co.uk/2008/08/liverpool_century_circuit_crit.html
Held the first of our 3 race series at Litherland last evening and went very well, we did however
reduce the entry cost to £5 for the Youth riders from £7, we are now reducing the entry cost from
£12 to £10 for the Senior riders for the remaining 2 events.
I will do a write up for the next newsletter Regards Paul Trueman
June Following on from the last report, Mike Gregg and Dan rode the Isle of Man weekend, held over the Bank Holiday. As well as the formidable 10m riders, most of the top A & B category riders in the UK, plus a Dutch team were competing. They both rode well in the prologue and road races. Finishing in Mid Field places. 1/5/08 The first of the Wednesday night league events at Litherland. As this clashes with our club night, I cannot give a blow by blow report of how our riders fared. So here are the results. Daniel Gibson and Leighton Sharman are certainly making a name for themselves and the Century, with their performances. Also, Adam Gibson has caught the bug now and is improving by the week. Our under 16’s Mike, Dan and Lewis have made huge strides in their age group as well. Dan recently had 5th place from a field of 150 in a mountain bike event, as well as riding the track each week. Mike Gregg is working on his time trials and did a personal best of 24m 00s in our open 10. He improves week by week, in fact he now understands that all this training and racing has to be linked to rest days and recovery. I hate to think what our Mum’s and Dad’s petrol bills are like with venues as far apart as Preston, Lancaster, Litherland, Lichfield and Shrewsbury over recent weeks. I have mentioned recently that Lewis Sharman’s first love is basketball. Well congratulations are due, as after several trials he has been accepted into the Manchester Mazestic’s Team. Don’t give up the bike Lewis, try and manage both sports. 29/5/08 Preston U8’s Daniel Gibson 1st 28/5/08 Litherland U8’s Daniel Gibson 2nd U12’s Adam Gibson 2nd 4/6/08 Litherland U8’s Daniel Gibson 1st

There are 150 riders from Ireland, I.O.M. and the UK participating in this event. How times have changed a 3 day event for schoolboys. A prologue on Friday night at Victoria Park, Southport, circuit race Saturday at Preston arena, and a final circuit race at Litherland on Sunday. Our results were as follows;- U8’s Adam Gibson 4th, 6th 6th 6th overall U10’s Leighton Sharman 2nd 3rd 2nd 2nd “ U16’s Mike Gregg 33rd = 24th 24th 29th “ Dan Whelan 47th =24th 39th 45th “ Some 150 riders in the field, with I.O.M. and Ireland taking part and we know what tough and aggressive riders they are. So well done to all our riders.
