Cyclists Urged to Hit the Road
with Computer Screen Test

Parents of young cyclists who are concerned for their children riding on busy roads may be interested in the new concept of virtual reality cycling. The Liverpool Century Road Club has invested £3,000 in CompuTrainers in the hope of attracting boys and girls to the sport.

The state of the art equipment connects a racing bike to a computer that may be programmed to produce a variety of cycling conditions, including hill climbs and head winds.

and how their race looks on the computer screen (below right).

The technology will also measure the amount of energy being used, even the amount of power being produced by each leg. The cyclists may then watch their image on a screen as they ride the designated course and race each other. The long term aim is to take the equipment into schools in a move designed to entice people Into the saddle.

Olympic Team Pursuit bronze medallist Jon Clay was the guest of honour at an open evening at the Liverpool Century RC clubroom at Tarbock Village Hall when boys and girls were invited to "come and try it". The grant for the equipment came from the Millennium Awards For All scheme funded by the National Lottery.

The club has an excellent record in developing young talent. Among current members are last year's National Schools Time Trial Team Champions, Mat and Tim Brammeier and John Griffiths (Gateacre CCS). Any school or individual wishing to become involved should contact George Darlington, 48 Gainsborough Ave., Maghull Liverpool L31 7AY tel. 526 1963.
